WHAT CAN A DIABETIC ALERT DOG DO FOR ME?
A diabetic alert dog is trained to alert their owners to a physiological change in their blood which causes a drop in glucose levels. The dogs detect these “lows” through a scent given off when the change occurs. Often, alert dogs can detect these changes before technological monitors can, making them a potent tool in blood sugar management.
When a diabetic alert dog detects the change in blood sugar, it is trained to notify the owner as well as additional people so they can act to rectify the situation by eating or drinking. Diabetic alert dogs can provide emotional security and a sense of balance for individuals and for those who have loved ones with diabetes. They can help them lead a more confident independent lifestyle.
HOW MUCH DOES A SERVICE DOG COST?
Our dogs range between 18,000 and 25,000 depending on the tasks needed.
HOW LONG IS THE TRAINING?
The dogs are in training for approximately 12 months. It depends on what your needs are for the dog and the dog’s aptitude. This is always determined on a case to case basis and we work hard to clearly communicate with our clients throughout the training process. Our training starts at 8weeks of age and we train 7 days a week. We believe in a very strong foundation.
CAN I USE MY OWN DOG?
Yes, you can if the dog meets certain criteria. Alert dogs and service dogs need to be a certain personality type: highly food or play motivated, good listeners, without too many ingrained negative habits. We can evaluate a dog’s potential at our facility.
FOR DIABETIC ALERT DOGS, DO I NEED TO SUPPLY MY OWN SAMPLES?
No, you do not have to. We have donors that provide us with samples, but we are always willing to accept your own for the training of your dog. Diabetic alert dog samples are provided as cotton swabs soaked with saliva from low blood sugars, then sealed in an airtight container, bagged and frozen. The samples must be sent to us in a cold box so that they do not reach room temperature.
CAN THE DOG ALSO BE A FAMILY PET?
Yes, of course we encourage that. This is a living being that deserves to have a happy, comfortable life. It’s more than possible for an animal to be a dedicated, well-trained alert dog and also a part of your family like any other pet.
CAN YOU TRAIN ONE FOR US EVEN IF WE DO NOT LIVE IN TEXAS?
Absolutely, we have placed our service dogs all over the country.
